All about Corduroy Fabric!

All about Corduroy Fabric!

What is Corduroy?

Corduroy is a 'cut-pile' fabric, which means the threads are looped and cut.

It features raised ridges that run vertically down the fabric. It looks like a 'cord' .
These come in a range of sizes, from 'baby' corduroy to the regular size.
It's is a soft fabric which has a nap (direction of fibres, run your hand both ways along the fabric and you'll see what we mean!).

What is Corduroy made of?

Generally Corduroy is made from Cotton.

What are some sewing tips for Corduroy?

  • As this fabric has a nap, make sure you place the pieces of the sewing pattern the same way so that the nap goes in the same direction. The ridges should be going vertically (traditionally)
  • Make sure the direction of the grainline matches the direction of the ridges.
  • Make sure you keep an eye on the ridges when you are sewing, keep them straight!
  • Be gentle, if your presser foot is creating too much pressure try a walking foot. You can also lower the thread tension a little if you find that ridges are getting crushed.
  • Avoid using an iron or pressing the fabric, it's also suggested that you don't use fusible interfacing fort this reason.
  • It is recommended that you finish all the edges, corduroy can unravel.
  • Top-stitching looks great!

How to care for Corduroy?

  • Wash your garment inside out, with a cold wash
  • Use steam to straighten it out if you need
