Silk is one of the most sought-after fabrics in the world - and one of the most misunderstood. At Super Cheap Fabrics we carry a focused, quality-checked silk range across three collections: Printed Silk, Silk Chiffon and Georgette, and Plain Silk. Everything is sold by the metre with no minimum order, shipped Australia-wide in 3-8 business days.
Whether you're after a richly printed silk for a statement blouse, a sheer chiffon for eveningwear, or a clean silk satin for bridal or lining work - it's all here, sourced from the world's leading silk-producing regions and priced to make real projects possible.

Understanding the Silk Types We Stock
Printed Silk
Silk takes dye and print more vividly than any other natural fibre, which is why printed silk delivers colour depth that printed cotton or polyester simply can't match. Our printed silks are typically light to medium weight with a soft, fluid drape, making them ideal for blouses, shirt dresses, scarves, kimonos and any garment where the print is the hero. Because prints sit on a smooth, lustrous surface, fine details stay crisp - florals, geometrics and painterly designs all hold their definition. When sewing printed silk, plan your pattern layout carefully so large motifs sit where you want them across seams.
Silk Chiffon and Georgette
Chiffon and georgette are the sheers of the silk world. Chiffon is featherweight and translucent with a smooth surface and a soft, floating drape - the classic choice for overlays, floaty sleeves, evening gowns and bridal veils. Georgette is woven from tightly twisted yarns, giving it a subtly crinkled, matte surface with slightly more body and opacity than chiffon. That extra grip makes georgette noticeably easier to cut and sew, so if it's your first sheer project, start there. Both fabrics reward French seams, narrow rolled hems and a patient hand.
Plain Silk: Satin, Crepe and Stretch
Plain silk is the workhorse of the range. Silk satin has the glossy face and matte reverse most people picture when they think of silk - beautiful for slip dresses, camisoles, bridalwear and luxury linings. Silk crepe has a fine pebbled texture with a matte finish and a heavier, more forgiving drape that skims rather than clings, making it one of the easiest silks to sew and wear. Stretch silk blends a small amount of elastane into the weave for comfort and recovery in fitted styles. Solid colours across all three make them the foundation pieces of a silk sewing wardrobe.
Where Our Silk Comes From
We source our silk from India and China - the two largest silk-producing countries in the world, together accounting for over 90% of global silk output. Indian silk from Karnataka (the home of Mysore silk) and West Bengal is known for its rich natural lustre and beautiful drape. Chinese silk from Zhejiang province is prized for its fine, even weave and smooth finish. We also source from Thailand depending on the fabric type. Every fabric is quality-checked before it reaches our store and website.
Sewing and Caring for Silk
Silk has a reputation for being difficult, but most of it comes down to preparation. Use a fine, fresh needle (a 70/10 microtex is ideal), reduce your presser foot pressure, and cut slippery silks in a single layer on a non-slip surface - a cotton sheet under the fabric works well. Pattern weights and a rotary cutter beat pins and scissors on chiffon and georgette. Stay-stitch curved edges early, because silk loves to grow on the bias.
For care, hand wash in cool water with a gentle detergent or dry clean, and never wring the fabric - roll it in a towel to remove excess water and dry flat away from direct sunlight, which fades silk over time. Press on a low silk setting from the reverse side while the fabric is slightly damp. Always test wash a small offcut first, especially with printed and deeply dyed silks. Treated well, silk garments outlast almost anything else in your wardrobe.
