Our plain silk collection covers every silk type sewists actually use - from smooth Silk Satin and sheer Silk Chiffon to textured Silk Crepe, comfortable Stretch Silk, and vibrant Printed Silk. All sold by the metre, no minimums, with fast 3-8 day delivery across Australia.

Silk satin drapes beautifully for formal wear and linings. Chiffon is your go-to for floaty overlays and sleeves. Crepe sits in the middle - matte, structured, and far more forgiving to sew. If you're unsure which type suits your pattern, our team at our Collingwood store can help you choose before you buy.

Where Our Silk Comes From

🌏 Sourced from India, China and Thailand

We source our silk primarily from India and China - the two largest silk-producing countries in the world. Indian silk from Karnataka (the home of Mysore silk) and West Bengal is known for its rich natural lustre and exceptional drape. Chinese silk from Zhejiang province is prized for its fine, even weave and smooth finish. We also source from Thailand, depending on the fabric type and season. All fabrics are quality-checked before reaching our store and website.

Silk fabric - common questions

What is the difference between silk satin and silk chiffon?
Silk satin is smooth, weighty and lustrous - ideal for gowns, linings and bridal wear. Silk chiffon is sheer, floaty and lightweight, best for overlays and sleeves. Both are genuine silk but behave very differently under the needle - chiffon needs a finer needle and more patience.
Where does Super Cheap Fabrics source its silk from?
We source silk primarily from India and China - together responsible for over 90% of global silk production. Indian silk from Karnataka (Mysore silk) and West Bengal is known for its rich lustre and drape. Chinese silk from Zhejiang is prized for its fine consistent weave. We also source from Thailand depending on the fabric type.
Is silk difficult to sew for beginners?
Silk crepe and silk satin are manageable for confident beginners. Use a fine needle (size 70/10), pattern weights instead of pins, and cut on a non-slip surface. Chiffon is the most challenging - if you're new to sewing silk, start with crepe or stretch silk first.
Can silk be washed at home or does it need dry cleaning?
Many silk types handle gentle hand-washing in cold water with a mild detergent - always test a swatch first. Heavier satins and crepes are usually fine. Delicate chiffons are safer dry cleaned. Never wring or twist silk - dry flat away from direct sunlight.
Do you sell silk fabric by the metre with no minimum?
Yes - all silk fabrics are sold by the metre with no minimum order. Buy 0.5m to test a fabric or several metres for a full garment. We ship Australia-wide in 3-8 business days, or visit us in-store at 153 Sackville Street, Collingwood VIC - 5 minutes from Melbourne CBD.
